Teens Turning Green: Schools

Teens Turning Green: Schools is a curriculum based program that encourages student-led investigation of toxic exposures on school campuses and inspires young people to take action and minimize risk through implementation of healthy alternatives. Student leaders collaborate with adult mentors in a step by step educational experience supporting a sustainable future.

Go to Teensturninggreenschool.com for the web toolkit and register for the program.

Join the Teens Turning Green Schools (TTG:Schools) campaign and replace the toxic cleaning products and school supplies on your campus with greener alternatives.  You’ll want to start by taking an inventory of all the products used in your school in the four areas of campus: classroom, food service, janitorial, and grounds.  Set up a meeting with a staff member at your school who is involved in the purchasing and oversight of the products on which your project focuses.  Inform the staff member about the goals of TTG:Schools and ask them if they can take you on a tour of the products used around school that you plan to investigate.  Write down the names and brands of these products.

Choose an area of campus or specific product on which to focus and frame your project.  You’ll start by investigating the product(s), and identify green alternatives for conventional products, found on the TTG: Schools website , using internet research, or from green products retailers.   Find at least three greener alternatives for each product that you want to replace.  Test the efficacy of these greener alternatives, either with the campus staff or as a “science experiment” for school.  Using your conclusions, choose the most effective and least expensive greener alternative.  You can find greener alternatives on campus for pesticides and herbicides, toxic dry erase markers, conventional cleaning supplies, and so much more!
